Multiversus is the game that I’ve been waiting to play since the open beta in 2022. A free-to-play platform fighter game by Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games was released in May 2024. It can be played by anyone who owns a PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, or Xbox. As a guy who played Brawlhalla intensively, I find this game quite interesting and unique, as it includes iconic characters that are known worldwide.

The characters include Arya Stark (Game of Thrones), Batman, Black Adam, Bugs Bunny, Dinn the Human, Garnet (Steven Universe), Gizmo (Gremlins), Harley Quinn, Iron Giant, Jake the Dog, LeBron James, Marvin the Martian, Morty, Reindog (original character), Rick, Shaggy (Scooby-Doo), Steven Universe, Stripe (Gremlins), Superman, Taz, Tom & Jerry, Velma (Scooby-Doo), Wonder Woman, Banana Guard (Finn & Jake), Joker, and Jason (Friday the 13th). Of course, there will be more along the way.

You’ll get Shaggy for free upon playing the game. As for other characters, a few of them are playable for free according to the weekly rotations. To unlock the character permanently, you can either purchase the character with in-game currency (which you can get for free upon playing the game) or, if money is not a long-term life issue for you, head on and purchase the battle pass.

One of the things that I like about this game is how they preserve the feel and personality of each iconic character they put out. We can clearly see that the developers really put their hearts into making this game. The maps are also related to the universe of each character, like the Throne Room and Finn & Jake’s Tree Fort. There’s also maps related to characters who are not on the roster, such as Powerpuff Girls’ Townsville and Dexter’s Laboratory.

Another unique feature of this game is that it focuses on 2v2 gameplay, allowing you to play with a friend (non-imaginary) and share abilities together to fight off the opposing team. For instance, Bugs Bunny can dig holes in the ground and “teleport” from one hole to another; his teammate can do that too! Other than that, players can pick and choose their perks, and if both fighters on the same team use the same perks, the effect will be more powerful if not doubled. So, it is really important to discuss this with your partner beforehand.

Okay, now for the fun part. The Good and the Bad about this game. Let’s talk about the Good first.

The Good

I love how I can play my favourite cartoon characters, which I knew and loved since I was a kid. To be able to fight as Superman teaming up with Shaggy and fighting off against Tom & Jerry and THE LeBron James in the Batcave?! That’s absolutely madness.

The attacks and special attacks differ based on characters to give that extra touch of personality to each character, and it is on point! Like LeBron James throwing and catching basketballs, and Batman using the iconic Batarang. These are the feelings that most fighting games lack.

The playstyle is also not too complicated, and it’s also not too far from Brawlhalla. If you’re a Brawlhalla player, you can just straight-up play this game with ease. And yes, I know I’ve been comparing this game with Brawlhalla a ton, but the plus point for Multiversus is that the account link for cross-progression is a lot better than Brawlhalla. All you need to do is sign in with the same Warner Games account, and that’s it.

The Bad

The server stinks so bad that I almost report it as prostitution. For 5 matches, I’ve encountered 3 network errors or player disconnects, which forced me out of the match, and I need to find a new match again! It gets worse when I play 2v2 with my friend, as sometimes (most of the time) only one of us encounters the error and gets kicked out of the match, while the other one, who has no issue, will continue to play the match with a disconnected partner that doesn’t move and gives free pointers to the opposing team. I’m not sure whether it is a worldwide problem or just an Asian problem, as during the open beta, the Asia server was cut off after a few weeks of opening. Maybe they have issues with the Asian region, or maybe they’re just straight-up racists (JK)? Who knows.

Moreover, the fighting gameplay is quite sluggish and choppy. If a character gets hit, the screen freezes for quite some time. It is somewhat distracting at times, but somehow I got used to it. I have never experienced this kind of thing while playing Brawlhalla, so that’s a shocker.

The UI still has a lot of bugs here and there, but that can easily be fixed with an update. I just hope they’ll fix the server. That’s all I asked for. I hope it is not too much to ask.

To conclude, the idea and concept of this game are really awesome, with great story-telling. There’s so much to improve, and I’ll trust the developers to do their job for now. I’ll rate this game 6.5/10, and it could go way higher if it weren’t for the servers.
